The Baby Who Only Naps Facing the Window: A Personalized Infant Care Routine
There’s a baby we once cared for who wouldn’t settle for a nap unless she was facing the window. Not held a certain way. Not rocked a certain amount. Just facing the light.
We didn’t find a way to change that. We just started laying her mat that way, every time.
That’s really what personalized care looks like — not a philosophy on a wall, but a hundred small adjustments like this one, made because a baby showed us what she needed.
Routines Are a Starting Point, Not a Rulebook
Every baby starts on a general routine — sleep windows, feed times, play periods. But almost every baby quietly rewrites parts of it within the first week or two:
A baby who naps better 15 minutes earlier than the “standard” time
A baby who needs white noise for one nap but not the other
A baby who feeds calmer upright than cradled, for reasons no one can fully explain
We treat the routine as a first draft. The baby writes the final version.
Small Preferences We Build Entire Routines Around
Some of the adjustments we make aren’t dramatic — but they’re the difference between a baby who settles and a baby who fights it:
Positioning — facing a window, a wall, or a specific corner of the room
Sound — silence for one baby, gentle background noise for another
Touch — a hand on the back versus gentle patting versus no touch at all
Timing — nap windows that shift slightly earlier or later than “typical”
None of these come from a manual. They come from watching, adjusting, and watching again.
Why This Matters More Than It Sounds
It would be easier, honestly, to run one routine for every baby in the room. It’s not what we do, because a baby who’s fighting an environment that doesn’t fit them isn’t just having a harder day — they’re spending energy on discomfort instead of on the actual business of growing, exploring, and feeling secure.
Building around a baby’s specific preferences isn’t an extra. It’s what lets everything else — sleep, feeding, play, bonding — actually work the way it’s meant to.
What This Looks Like for Your Baby
We can’t tell you in advance what your baby’s “window nap” will be. That’s the point — we don’t know yet either. What we can tell you is that we’ll be watching for it from day one, and building the day around what we find, not the other way around.
At Camelot Infant Care, every baby’s routine is shaped around them — their preferences, their pace, their cues. If you’d like to know how we build a routine specifically around your baby, we’d be glad to walk you through it at our centres.
